Helping Western Australia’s Native Forests Since 1975

South-West Forests Defence Foundation Inc. (SFDF) is a not-for-profit voluntary group that has been involved for nearly five decades with the better management and protection of the forests of the south-west region of Western Australia.

It was formed in 1975, the year the woodchip industry began after the state government of Charles Court passed legislation to allow the forests in the south-west to be exploited for woodchips. At the same time, the forests of the Darling Scarp were being strip mined for  bauxite. Another group, the Campaign to Save Native Forests (CSNF), worked in co-operation with the SFDF on publishing critiques of the woodchip industry in the karri forest and bauxite mining in the jarrah forest. The SFDF continued to take issue with industry and government plans for the forests, and beginning in 1988 with the creation of Shannon National Park, some of the region was given protection from forestry by the creation of more national parks and reserves as called for in SFDF and CSNF campaigns.
